Interconnected Worlds: Advancing Understanding in Human-Animal Relationships
To represent the diversity and wide applicability of anthrozoology studies – whether in theory or in applied practice – our conference theme will draw inspiration from the interconnectedness of the natural world in promoting wellness for all living beings, inclusive of considerations to broader ecosystems and intergenerational
knowledge as they may impact human-animal interactions. Collaboration will be a cornerstone of the conference and its associated events, where attendees will gain exposure to Indigenous cultural practices and worldviews.

Conference Themes
The vision of the conference will be to foster a deeper understanding of the intricate
connections between humans, animals, and the natural world, aiming to promote
harmony, understanding, respect, and mutually beneficial interactions. Our focus will be on the following:

-
Innovations in conceptualizing, approaches to, and collaborative research in human-animal interactions and the human-animal bond;
-
“One Health” and related frameworks with a focus on recognizing, or integrating, broader ecological systems of the natural world as they relate to human-animal relationships;
-
Multiple ways of knowing and seeing when approaching anthrozoology – including Indigenous research methodological approaches and innovative data dissemination;
-
Considering “interconnection” in human-animal interaction research, especially as it relates to wellness promotion for humans, animals, and the environment;
-
Cultivating animal welfare, including respect for the inherent value and rights of animals, acknowledging their sentience, and their right to live in a world free from harm and exploitation.
Who Should Attend?
Each year, the ISAZ conference welcomes a range of researchers, practitioners, and students from a wide variety of disciplines and perspectives including psychology, anthropology, ethology, medicine, public policy, law, philosophy, arts, and humanities (and more). We aim to encourage a broad discussion of research on the many ways our lives intersect with, and impact, other species.
Given that a strong focus of our host institution’s human-animal interaction research is
in applied practice, we will also encourage and welcome attendance from health care
practitioners or interested community members or partners who may benefit from the
knowledge being shared.
